Launched at the 1958 Geneva Motor Show at just £669, the Austin-Healey Sprite Mk1 was the car that made open-top British motoring genuinely affordable. Designed by Geoffrey Healey and built at the MG factory in Abingdon alongside the MGA, its famous frog-eye headlamps were a glorious accident — the planned pop-up lights proved too expensive, so they were fixed in a raised position instead, giving the car a permanently cheerful expression that became its defining feature. Americans called it the Bugeye. The British called it the Frogeye. Everyone who drove one called it unforgettable.
