Bath Green Park is one of the finest surviving Victorian railway station buildings in England — and for nearly a century it was the northern gateway of the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, one of the most loved and most mourned lines in British railway history.
The station opened in 1870, built by the Midland Railway with an elegant Italianate train shed that still stands today as a Grade II listed building in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage City. The S&D ran south from Green Park over the steep Mendip Hills to Bournemouth West, serving communities across Somerset and Dorset until the line's controversial closure on 7 March 1966 — one of the most bitterly contested decisions of the entire Beeching era. When the last train left, Green Park fell silent. It is now, in a twist of fate both practical and melancholy, a Sainsbury's.
This 11oz ceramic mug carries an original Belchampian design celebrating Green Park as it deserves to be remembered — not as a supermarket car park, but as the atmospheric Victorian terminus it once was.
The ideal gift for Somerset & Dorset devotees, Bath residents and visitors, Victorian architecture enthusiasts, and anyone who still mourns what Beeching took away in 1966. Pairs perfectly with the Belchampian Bath Green Park t-shirt and tote bag.
