The Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company was one of the great names of British railway manufacturing. Founded in 1855 at Smethwick in the West Midlands, BRCW built rolling stock for railways across Britain and throughout the British Empire for over a century. In the diesel era their Type 2 and Type 3 locomotives — powered by Sulzer engines and known to enthusiasts as the Sulzer Birminghams — became a familiar and distinctive presence on British Railways. The company closed in 1963, a casualty of BR's rationalisation of its supplier base, but the brass plates it fixed to its products have outlasted it by more than sixty years. Original BRCW builder's plates now fetch hundreds of pounds at railway memorabilia auctions.
