From 1933 to 1972, the Brighton Belle was the most glamorous commute in Britain. Running London Victoria to Brighton in exactly sixty minutes, it was the world's only all-electric Pullman express — five Metropolitan-Cammell cars in classic umber and cream livery, complete with table service, white linen, and breakfast kippers for the actors, journalists and bohemians who made it their regular transport between London and the Sussex coast.
Originally launched as the Southern Belle in January 1933 by the Southern Railway, it was renamed the Brighton Belle in June 1934. For nearly four decades it was the train of choice for Brighton's theatrical community — Laurence Olivier was among those who famously protested its withdrawal, reportedly telegraphing British Rail to complain about the loss of his kippers. It ran its last service on 30 April 1972, and its passing was mourned as the end of an era in British railway travel. Several of the original Pullman cars survive today, restored to service on the Bluebell Railway in East Sussex.
This retro graphic sweatshirt celebrates one of the great lost trains of the British railway network — a service that was as much a social institution as a means of transport.
The ideal gift for railway enthusiasts, Pullman devotees, Brighton historians, and anyone who knows what British Rail took away in 1972.
