Britain's first diesel Pullman service was also one of its most beautiful — and for a brief golden period it ran through some of the most spectacular railway scenery in England.

The Midland Pullman entered service on 4 July 1960, operating between London St Pancras and Manchester Central in first class only, with a level of comfort and style that British Railways had rarely attempted in the diesel era. The distinctive Nanking blue and white livery of the six-car Metro-Cammell sets turned heads wherever they ran, and the air-conditioned interiors — with proper at-seat dining and a cocktail service — set a standard that most of BR's contemporaneous rolling stock couldn't approach.

What made the Midland Pullman's routing uniquely memorable was its path northward through the Derbyshire Peak District — through Ambergate, Matlock, Miller's Dale, and the dramatic limestone gorges of the Derbyshire Dales on the former Midland Railway main line to Manchester. This was one of the great scenic railway journeys in England: Monsal Viaduct, the Wye Valley, the sweeping curves through Buxton — a modernist blue express threading through Victorian engineering in a landscape of extraordinary beauty. The route through the Dales closed under Beeching between 1967 and 1968, severing the direct Midland line to Manchester and leaving the Pullman to find an alternative path for its final years.

The Midland Pullman was withdrawn in 1973, displaced by the advancing HST programme. The Blue Pullman sets were scrapped — not a single vehicle survived into preservation. It remains one of the great losses of the BR modernisation era.

This 11oz ceramic mug commemorates the Midland Pullman in vintage poster style — the ideal gift for BR enthusiasts, Peak District railway historians, Pullman devotees, and anyone who knows what ran through Monsal Dale before Beeching closed the line.
