In 1966 Cheltenham lost its finest railway station. Fifty years on, most people in the town have no idea it ever existed.

Cheltenham St James opened in 1847 as the Great Western Railway's terminus in the town — a handsome station on St James Square that served London Paddington expresses, including the named Cadet service, for nearly 120 years. At its peak, Cheltenham was served by three separate stations: St James for the GWR, Lansdown — which survives today as Cheltenham Spa — for the Midland Railway, and the smaller Malvern Road halt. It was an extraordinary level of railway provision for a town of Cheltenham's size, and St James was the jewel in that crown.

Beeching ended it. St James closed on 3 January 1966, the direct Paddington services were withdrawn, and the station was demolished. The site became a retail development. Another piece of Cheltenham's Victorian heritage, gone without adequate reflection on what was being lost.
