For eleven months in 1930, the Chrysler Building was the tallest structure on earth — and arguably it has never stopped being the most beautiful.

Completed in May 1930 to the designs of architect William Van Alen for Walter P. Chrysler and the Chrysler Corporation, the building rises 1,046 feet above Midtown Manhattan in a tour de force of Art Deco ambition. The distinctive stainless steel crown — with its radiating sunburst arches and triangular windows — was assembled in secret inside the building and raised into position in just 90 minutes, giving Van Alen his record-breaking height before the competing Bank of Manhattan Trust could respond. The eagle gargoyles at the 61st floor are modelled directly on 1929 Chrysler automobile hood ornaments. The lobby, clad in African marble with a ceiling mural depicting transportation and human endeavour, remains one of the great interior spaces of twentieth-century American architecture.

The Empire State Building overtook it eleven months later. The Chrysler Building has never quite forgiven it — and most architects will tell you, quietly, that Van Alen's masterpiece is the finer building.
