Old Euston station was one of the great lost buildings of Victorian Britain. Commissioned in July 1836 and completed by architect Philip Hardwick in 1837, its centrepiece was the Euston Arch — a monumental Greek Doric propylaeum and the largest of its kind in the world at the time. The station was the southern terminus of the London & Birmingham Railway, the first mainline railway into London, and the Arch announced its arrival with imperial confidence.
In 1962, despite a fierce public campaign led by Sir John Betjeman, the Arch and the original station were demolished to make way for electrification works. It became one of the most notorious acts of architectural destruction in postwar Britain and a galvanising moment for the conservation movement. The rubble was reportedly dumped in the Prescott Channel in east London — and campaigners are still fighting to retrieve and rebuild it.
This vintage-style t-shirt commemorates the original Euston — the station that should still be standing.
The ideal gift for railway history enthusiasts, architectural heritage campaigners, London historians, and anyone who knows what was lost in 1962.
