Founded in Hunslet, Leeds in 1864, the Hunslet Engine Company spent over a century building some of the toughest and most characterful locomotives in British industrial history — and their builder's plates, fixed to engines working everywhere from Welsh slate quarries to the Western Front, are among the most evocative artefacts in railway preservation.

Hunslet's narrow gauge engines became legendary in the slate quarrying districts of Snowdonia, working the brutal gradients of Penrhyn, Dinorwic, and the Ffestiniog quarries in conditions that tested every rivet. Dozens survive in active preservation today on the Ffestiniog Railway, the Welsh Highland Railway, and the Talyllyn — still carrying passengers over the same mountain passes they served in the quarrying era, their Hunslet plates intact after more than a century of work. In the First World War, Hunslet supplied hundreds of narrow gauge locomotives to the War Department Light Railways on the Western Front, keeping Allied supply lines running through the mud of Flanders where nothing else could operate. It was industrial engineering at the service of survival.

This ceramic mug carries the Hunslet Engine Company builder's plate design — a daily companion for the narrow gauge enthusiast, the industrial heritage devotee, and anyone who has ever stopped on a Welsh mountain railway to read the plate on a small green engine and felt the weight of history in those few cast letters.

Part of Belchampian Apparel's Builder's Plate Series — the only merchandise range dedicated to the great names of British locomotive manufacturing. See also the BRCW, Vulcan Foundry, Robert Stephenson, and North British plates in the same collection. Pairs perfectly with the Belchampian Hunslet Engine Co. t-shirt.
