Founded in Hunslet, Leeds in 1864 by John Towlerton Leather, the Hunslet Engine Company became one of the most prolific and beloved locomotive builders in British industrial history — and their legacy lives on today on preserved railways across Britain and the world.

Hunslet built locomotives for industries across the British Empire: coal mines, slate quarries, dockyards, sugar plantations, and military railways on every continent. In the Welsh slate quarrying districts of Snowdonia their small, tough narrow gauge engines became indispensable — working the steep gradients of Penrhyn Quarry, Dinorwic, and the Ffestiniog quarries in conditions that would have defeated lesser machines. Dozens of these survivors are preserved and working today on the Ffestiniog Railway, the Welsh Highland Railway, the Talyllyn, and narrow gauge lines across Britain — the most tangible living legacy of Leeds engineering in the landscape of Wales.

In the First World War, Hunslet supplied hundreds of narrow gauge locomotives to the War Department Light Railways — the network of 60cm gauge lines that kept the Western Front supplied through the mud of Flanders and Picardy. Hunslet 4-6-0Ts and their equivalents moved ammunition, supplies, and wounded men across terrain where nothing else could operate. It was one of the great industrial contributions to the Allied war effort and it came from a terraced street in south Leeds.

This vintage tee carries the Hunslet Engine Company builder's plate — part of Belchampian Apparel's Builder's Plate Series, the only clothing range dedicated to the great names of British locomotive manufacturing. See also the BRCW, Vulcan Foundry, Robert Stephenson, and North British plates in the same collection.
