At its peak, the North British Locomotive Company was the largest locomotive manufacturer in the world — and it was built entirely in Glasgow.

Formed in 1903 from the merger of three legendary Springburn builders — Neilson Reid & Co., Sharp Stewart & Co., and Dübs & Co. — NBL brought together decades of accumulated expertise under one company with three works: Hyde Park, Atlas, and Queens Park. The locomotives that left those Glasgow works went to railways on every continent: South African Railways, Indian Railways, Australian state systems, Egyptian State Railways, and dozens of South American networks. At its height NBL employed over 8,000 men in Springburn alone, making that corner of Glasgow arguably the locomotive building capital of the world.

NBL's steam output was without question among the finest in Britain — the Clan and Standard classes it built for British Railways, the magnificent engines it produced for export customers, the wartime Austerity locomotives it turned out in vast numbers. The diesel programme of the late 1950s was a different story: unreliable hydraulic transmission contracts, cancelled orders, and a reputation that unravelled faster than it had been built. North British Locomotive Company closed in 1962, the works fell silent, and Springburn never fully recovered. It remains one of the defining industrial losses of postwar Scotland.

Their builder's plates — fixed to locomotives working from Cape Town to Calcutta, from Buenos Aires to Brisbane — are now prized by collectors worldwide. This 11oz ceramic mug carries the NBL builder's plate design as a tribute to Glasgow's greatest industrial achievement and its most poignant loss.

Part of Belchampian Apparel's Builder's Plate Series — the only merchandise range dedicated to the great locomotive manufacturers of British and Scottish railway history. See also the Vulcan Foundry, Robert Stephenson & Co., and Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. mugs in the same collection. NBL t-shirt coming soon.
