Nottingham Victoria Station opened on 24 May 1900 — named in honour of Queen Victoria's birthday — as a joint venture between the Great Central Railway and the Great Northern Railway, built on 13 acres in the heart of the city. With its ornate terracotta façade, imposing clock tower, and grand Edwardian interior, it was one of the finest urban railway stations in the East Midlands and a monument to the ambition of the pre-grouping railway era.

The Great Central Railway, whose London Extension had only reached Marylebone the previous year, had built Victoria as the Nottingham flagship of its bold mainline vision — a vision that included, extraordinarily, a planned Channel Tunnel connection to continental Europe. That ambition was never fully realised, and the GCR paid the ultimate price under the Beeching cuts.

Victoria Station closed on 4 September 1967. Despite protests from passengers and railway historians alike, the building was almost entirely demolished. Its replacement? A shopping centre. One of the most architecturally distinguished stations in the Midlands, gone in the name of retail.

This vintage travel-poster tee commemorates Nottingham Victoria as it deserves to be remembered — not as a car park beneath a shopping centre, but as the grand railway gateway it once was.
