In July 2026, a Ministry of Defence plan to house over a thousand people at a barracks a mile from Piddington — more than three times the village's entire population — landed on residents with no real say in the matter. So the Parish Council did what any self-respecting English village would do: they held a referendum on leaving the United Kingdom altogether.
It won't hold up in law. Nobody thinks Piddington is actually seceding. But that's rather the point — a village of 358 people found a way to make Westminster listen, and the story went round the world. It's the oldest British tradition there is: when the small guy gets ignored, he doesn't shout louder, he gets funnier about it.
