Cheltenham once had five railway stations. Today it has one. St James was the grandest — and the one that should never have been lost.

Cheltenham St James opened in 1847 as the Great Western Railway terminus in the town, serving London Paddington expresses including the named Cadet service and connecting Cheltenham to the broader GWR network. Located on St James Square, it was a handsome station that anchored the western approach to the town centre for nearly 120 years. Alongside Lansdown station — the Midland Railway terminus that survives today as Cheltenham Spa — and the smaller Malvern Road halt, St James made Cheltenham one of the best-served towns of its size on the British railway network.

The Beeching Report ended that. St James closed on 3 January 1966, its Paddington services withdrawn and its passengers left to manage. The station was demolished and the site redeveloped for retail — another piece of Cheltenham's Victorian heritage sacrificed for short-term convenience. The loss of the direct Paddington service was felt for decades.
