On 30th September 1935, the LNER launched the Silver Jubilee — Britain's first streamlined express service and the fastest scheduled train in the country. Hauled by Nigel Gresley's revolutionary A4 Pacific locomotives, it covered London King's Cross to Newcastle in exactly four hours, hitting 112mph on its inaugural run. Named in honour of King George V's Silver Jubilee, it set the standard for prestige rail travel in the prewar era and inspired the entire generation of streamlined expresses that followed — including the record-breaking Mallard.
