The InterCity 125 — designed by Sir Kenneth Grange, introduced on the Great Western Main Line in 1976, and holder of the world diesel speed record at 143.2mph set in 1987 — served Britain for half a century on routes from Penzance to Aberdeen. When replaced by bi-mode IETs and Azumas, rather than being scrapped the power cars and Mk3 coaches found an extraordinary new operator: Ferromex, Mexico's largest freight railway, which has been introducing them on the Servicio Inter Oceánico passenger service connecting the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific coast. Repainted in striking new livery, the trains that once thundered through Didcot and Doncaster are now threading through the mountains and deserts of Oaxaca and Veracruz.
