The MG 1100: Issigonis's Family Sports Car
Launched in 1962 and designed by Sir Alec Issigonis , the MG 1100 represented a bold evolution of the Mini concept into a proper family saloon. It featured a transversely-mounted 1098cc A-Series engine driving the front wheels , with a twin-carburettor setup producing 55 bhp and a distinctive MG grille setting it apart from its Austin and Morris siblings.
It could comfortably carry four adults where the Mini would prove cramped , achieving nearly 90 mph.
The ADO16 family became Britain's best-selling car from 1963 to 1966 and 1968 to 1971, with over 2.1 million produced . The MG version proved particularly popular, offering sporty character in a practical package.
