Bath Green Park. For nearly a century the northern gateway of one of Britain's most beloved railways — and one of its most mourned losses.

Green Park station opened in 1870, built by the Midland Railway as the northern terminus of what would become the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway. The S&D ran south from Bath over the dramatic gradients of the Mendip Hills, through Shepton Mallet, Evercreech Junction, Templecombe and Blandford Forum to Bournemouth West — a cross-country route of extraordinary scenic beauty that connected communities across Somerset and Dorset with a character entirely its own. To its admirers it was "Swift and Delightful." To those who struggled over the Mendips in winter, rather less so. To everyone who knew it, it was irreplaceable.

The Somerset & Dorset closed on 7 March 1966 — one of the most controversial acts of the entire Beeching era. Services had been deliberately run down, connections cut, and the closure pushed through with what many railway historians regard as undue haste, leaving communities without adequate alternatives. The campaign to save it was passionate and ultimately futile. Bath Green Park fell silent, its elegant Italianate train shed emptied of everything that had given it purpose.

The station building survived — now a Sainsbury's, its Grade II listed train shed roof still standing as Bath's most atmospheric railway relic. But the S&D itself is gone, and Green Park deserves to be remembered as what it was: the gateway to one of Britain's great lost railways.
