Before the corporate logos and the franchised operators, British railways were built by companies whose names were cast directly into the metal of everything they made. The Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company was among the most prolific — and their builder's plates, fixed to rolling stock across Britain and the Empire, are among the most sought-after artefacts in railway preservation today.
Founded at Smethwick in the West Midlands in 1855, BRCW supplied wagons, carriages and locomotives to railways on every continent. Their contribution to the British Railways diesel modernisation programme — the Sulzer-powered Type 2 and Type 3 diesel-electrics — gave them a final chapter in British railway history before closure in 1963. The plates that bore their name on those locomotives now command serious money at auction, tangible relics of a West Midlands manufacturing tradition that has all but vanished.
