The History Behind the Print: The Riley Kestrel & ADO16
Developed under the project code ADO16, this vehicle platform was an absolute masterclass in 1960s British automotive design. Masterminded by Sir Alec Issigonis (the engineering genius behind the Mini) and elegantly styled by the legendary Italian design house Pininfarina, the ADO16 range went on to become Britain’s best-selling car of the decade.
While millions of standard Austin and Morris 1100s hit the road, the Riley Kestrel (introduced in September 1965) was a cut above. Positioned as an upscale, sporting luxury saloon, it featured a gorgeous polished walnut dashboard, twin SU carburettors, and the innovative interconnected Hydrolastic suspension system for an incredibly smooth ride.
In 1967, the car evolved into the more powerful Riley 1300, utilizing a punchy 1275cc A-Series engine (sharing DNA with the fierce Mini Cooper S). With production lasting less than four years and only about 21,500 ever made across the 1100 and 1300 variants, the Riley Kestrel remains one of the rarest, most sought-after badges in British motoring history.
