Few names in British railway manufacturing carry more weight than Vulcan Foundry. Established in 1830 at Newton-le-Willows in Lancashire — just a year after Stephenson's Rocket changed the world — the Vulcan Foundry became one of the most prolific and technically ambitious locomotive builders in history, supplying engines to railways on every inhabited continent for nearly 140 years.
The roll call of locomotives built at Newton-le-Willows reads like a history of world railways: early engines for the pioneering Grand Junction Railway, thousands of locomotives for Indian Railways across the Victorian and Edwardian eras, the powerful WD Austerity 2-8-0s that served Allied forces across Europe in the Second World War, and BR Standard classes in the final years of British steam. In the diesel era, Vulcan Foundry — by then part of English Electric — produced the iconic Type 4 locomotives known to a generation of enthusiasts as the Class 40s, as well as components for the legendary Deltic, the most powerful diesel-electric locomotive of its day. The works finally closed in 1970 after 140 years of continuous locomotive production, absorbed into the GEC empire that had little use for its extraordinary heritage.
Vulcan Foundry builder's plates — oval, cast iron, and instantly recognisable — are among the most prized artefacts in railway preservation. This 11oz ceramic mug carries that iconic plate design in crisp detail, a daily reminder of Lancashire's extraordinary contribution to world railway history.
